Mulled wine is one of my favourite things about this time of year, I like to call it Christmas in a glass!
It’s festive, juicy and warm and won’t leave you with a horrendous hangover the next day either…but obviously you’ve got to drink everything in moderation!
It’s the perfect tipple if you’re having friends over for some Christmas cheer as you can easily make a large pot of it – and top it up if needed as the evening progresses.
Mulled wine is also pretty inexpensive to make and you don’t have to load it with sugar to make it taste great.
Come this time of year, I love to have it simmering away during the festivities as it creates such a wonderful aroma – it most definitely puts you in the Christmas mood.
Prep: 5-10 minutes Serves: 8 glasses
Ingredients:
- 1 orange
-
1 lemon
-
3-4 cinnamon sticks
-
Cloves
-
2 star anise (optional)
-
1/4 cup of sugar
-
1 bottle of cheap red wine
-
1 litre of orange juice (smooth is best for this recipe)
Method:
- Slice the orange and lemon and stud each piece with some cloves.
- Add these to a large pot and drop in the cinnamon sticks, sugar and star anise.
- Pour the whole bottle of wine on top and add the full litre of orange juice, giving it a quick stir with a ladle.
- Gently heat up the wine on a medium temperature for about five minutes, you don’t want to boil off all the alcohol! Taste the wine as it’s heating up – as you may want to add extra sugar.
- Then, let it simmer away on a low heat and ladle the wine as you need or want it throughout the evening – and savour the joyful delight that is ‘Christmas in a glass’!
Tip: Always allow one bottle of red to one litre of orange juice.
